The Story

By Dar Stellabotta

It all started in West Virginia. My buddy, Rob Lee, was managing a band called, "Urban Pioneers", and I traveled to the "wild and wonderful" state to see them perform. At the show, I saw a cigar box guitar among items to be raffled. Hopeful, I bought a few raffle tickets, and tried my luck. The gamble was a dud, but my interest was sparked.

When I got home, the notion of owning a cigar box guitar kept spinning in my head. So, when I had some free time, I looked up a “How to Make a Cigar Box Guitar” instructional video by a man named, Glenn Watt. Doubtful it'd work but too intrigued not to try, I scrounged around for the materials and began building a cigar box guitar of my own. To my surprise, the guitar worked! As I strummed the strings for the first time, I fell in love with the raw simplicity of the sound.

Despite having played music since I was 12 years old, up until this point in my life, nothing resonated more with me than the sound of this handmade guitar I created from a 2x1 piece of oak and a wooden Oliva cigar box. It matched perfectly with the unpretentious imperfection of my own voice.

With that first guitar in hand, I wrote, recorded, and released my first album called, “One Woman Jam” in 2017. Followed by my 2019 album, “Lo-Fi Rejection", which was funded by way of a successful kickstarter. That kickstarter allowed me to press 250 translucent green vinyl records and four black vinyl test presses, which completely sold out.

Following the release of "Lo-Fi Rejection", I hopped on a plane to play an eight-show tour in the Netherlands, booked by William Nijdam. Then, back home, I drove across the country for a U.S. tour. These tours slingshotted my music career to its present trajectory.

Previously, in 2017, I created a “How to Make a Cigar Box Guitar” instructional video of my own. The video was a success, garnering over 65k views. When I created this instructional video, I had no idea people would enjoy it so much.

Then, 2020 hit. The world as we knew it came to a screeching halt. During this time, I continued building cigar box guitars and played online festivals.

Four years later the world evolved, as does everything, and I released a new heart-baring single, “Leave Me To My Witch.” The haunting swamp rock song was released on August 24, 2024, the day of the Pennsylvania Cigar Box Guitar Festival where I debuted the creation live. The groundbreaking music video for the single premiered the same day.

Having crafted 108 cigar box guitars and two cigar box guitar amplifiers, my expterise expands along with my international fan following. Much of my success and artistic career growth is thanks to the enthusiasm and dedication of my increasing fan base. The breadth and engagement of my following catalyzed my recent affiliation with the renowned cigar box guitar industry supplier, C.B. Gitty Crafter Supplies. My new album, “Into Thin Air", which will be pressed onto translucent orange vinyl and released in early 2025, came to fruition as a direct result of generous fan support. Without my fans, I would not be where I am today creating and sharing my art honed from life, love, wood, scraps, and the sheer desire to showcase the beauty of rawness.
